<p>Lighting is the main ingredient for any food photography. Think of it as the color palette. The more light the more detail and color. We used light to maintain detail around the edge of this salad shot. Lighting also sculpted texture on the cut side of the roasted chicken slices. Finally, selective lighting defined the shape and color of the lettuce. All combining to create an appetite appealing product shot.</p>

Just across from my desk is a shelving system holding at least 60  bottles — tall, skinny, all sizes and shades. We have been creating wine packages for what must be close to ten years now. The bottles on these shelves however are not for consumption — I dare say I probably have an impressive vinegar collection at this point, I simply cant bare to open them. Each one is a super model!  I know what your thinking — he’s lost it!  What I mean is each bottle is the cleanest, best example of the bottling run I could get my hands on. <blockquote><p><em>&#8220;In the study, 11 staff members were shown a dozen bottles of wine — six with graphic labels, six with traditional ones. The following day, everyone was shown the same bottles mixed in with an additional 12 wines (half with graphic labels, half with traditional ones). </em></p>
<p><em><strong>When asked to identify the original bottles, eight staffers (73 percent) were able to recall the names of every one of the graphic-label wines. By contrast, only two staffers (18 percent) could correctly identify all the wines with traditional labels. </strong></em></p>
<p><em><strong>To put it another way: The test subjects could remember an average of 94 percent of the bottles with graphic wine labels</strong> and 68 percent of the ones with traditional labels. </em></p>
<p><em><strong>Any way you look at it, cheeky pictures and conspicuous type make a significant difference — no matter how subtle the wine inside</strong>.&#8221; </em></p></blockquote>

<p>Design-wise, Juan Gil isn&#8217;t the first wine label design to make use of organic imagery (likely not the first use of a bonsai tree either)– none the less this label has eclipsed sales expectations. It wasn&#8217;t being the first to do something that mattered, instead it was doing something in a purposeful way that made the difference.</p>

<p>In short, it&#8217;s not enough to put a tree on a label to make it look expensive, the design is about more than pretty pictures– a good design intentionally supports a larger message.</p>
<p>With Juan Gil, a gray on silver color pallet was used to illustrate quiet sophistication, while the bonsai was chosen to imply the care, quality and craft of the wine. The detail of the tree illustration itself implies to the customer that this is a quality product created with care and purpose. The label implies a story to the consumer, and invites them to try the wine.</p>
<p>The time between client approval and production of the label is usually a quiet one. The lack of drama is truly the result of GoBig&#8217;s competent production team, who work diligently to ensure that there will be no issues– regardless of the location of the printer (in this case, Spain). Foresight, planning and competence are as important as creativity and style. When a product hits the shelf, the drama begins– Juan Gil flew off the shelf so quickly after introduction that it was difficult to keep with demand.</p>
<p>The design, execution and production of the concept increased sales, generated perceived value, and went a long way to proving, it&#8217;s not what you do&#8230;<em>it&#8217;s how and why</em>, you do it.</p>

<blockquote><p>&#8220;<em>The locals, of course, have caught on. Boston-based importer Jorge Ordonez, who brings in 150 wines from more than 40 wineries in Spain, took two years to get the label right for his hugely popular Luzon, a juicy and ridiculously affordable red wine from the Jumilla region. “It was originally Finca Luzon, and the label had an old man holding a boy’s hand,” says Ordonez. “People don’t like the word ‘finca,’ which means ‘farm,’” and the picture was weird. </em></p>
<p><em><strong>So he and his Needham-based design firm, GoBig, went minimalist, choosing a black label dominated by overlapping translucent letters spelling out “Luzon.” You have to stare awhile to figure it out, which is surely the point. Within four months, the wine became one of his top sellers, alongside his newest hit from Jumilla, Juan Gil, a $16 wine that Ordonez says looks as though it costs $25 because of the label’s metallic matte finish. The tricks work, and in this case the wines are delicious</strong>.</em>&#8220;</p></blockquote>
<p>The benefit of well executed design and branding strategies is the ability to convey a message that translates into increased sales. In other words, <span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold">there is more to design than pretty pictures</span> <em><strong>and there are larger benefits than simply looking cool.</strong></em></p>
